CROWN ACT: What the Crown Act Means for a Future of Equality

Have you been a victim of hair discrimination? Perhaps you have been denied entry to a professional staff meeting because of how your natural hair is worn or witnessed a friend being treated differently due to the texture of her tresses?

A surge in reports of hair discrimination in the US has led to the introduction of the Crown Act law. The new law released in the state of California mandates the lawful protection of individual rights and interests concerning natural hair. From school policies banning dreadlocks to women being denied employment owing to natural hairstyles and textures, The Californian bill aims to create equal opportunity by eliminating prejudice against natural hair types.

What is the Crown Act?

The Crown Act Bill was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in July 2019 and came into effect in January 2020. The bill serves to prevent discriminatory acts against black men and women because of natural hairstyles.

The Crown Act law was passed in California, New York, Virginia, and New Jersey to protect individual rights against discrimination of hair texture, style, or condition.

Why is the Crown Act Law Important?

A rise in the number of cases due to hair discrimination has urged governing bodies to act swiftly with legal ramifications over the last decade. Adults and school-aged children are being denied opportunities based on the style or texture of their natural hair. Not only are these acts hurtful, but create a sense of supremacy and racial divide.

The Crown Act is more than a law. It represents individual rights and non-conformist beliefs. It is about protecting the interests of all persons. The Crown Act Bill prevents being held to a different standard because of wearing natural hair.

For many African American communities and anti-discrimination campaigns, the Act comes with immense gratification. For too long black men, women and children have suffered at the prejudicial hands of the powers that be. The introduction of the Crown Act law is not only the step needed to eliminate hair discrimination but also to introduce greater societal change in the future.

  • Celebrate National Hair Independence Day
  • Be proud of your natural hair and wear it with style!

July 3rd will be marked as National Black Hair Independence Day to honor the successful execution of the Crown Act. It is a reminder of the efforts needed to facilitate lasting change and to make a powerful difference in the lives of others. The Crown Act Bill is an important part of achieving equality no matter our hair, skin color, or social standing.

The Crown Act law is being considered in an additional 23 states. It is the start of a revolution that every one of us should be a part of. If you have experienced non-acceptance or prejudicial behavior because of your natural hair, recognize that your voice has not gone unheard. The introduction of the new Act is meant to protect your rights and empower the real you!
